Roll back the calendar to 2002 when Kent State men’s basketball advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight — because Kent (the town this time) is back in the Elite Eight.
Kent beat San Marcos in the Sweet 16 of the Strong Towns competition to advance to the next round where we up against the biggest American City left in the tournament — Niagara Falls NY.
Yes, Niagara Falls is about two and one-half times bigger than Kent but we already proved against San Marcos that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. Point spreads are overrated, just ask David and Goliath.
The smallest City left in the tourney? That’s Kent.
Narrowest margin of victory in Sweet 16? That’s Kent.
Biggest margin of victory in Sweet 16? That’s Niagara Falls.
Underdog? Yep, but we’ll play with a chip on our shoulder. We’ll be watching film and preparing our game plan for Niagara Falls all weekend.
Ok, so they’ve got one of the 7 wonders of the world in their hometown but do they have Ray’s Place and an awesome downtown? I don’t think so, that’s all Kent.
Play to our strengths, dictate tempo, and out hustle them for votes — that’s our game plan.
We could use your help, give a shout out to the hometown in the next round. Voting will open next week.
