Lace up your running shoes, strap a kayak on your back and pump up your bike tires because this Saturday (August 7th) is the 2nd Annual Black Squirrel Adventure Race in downtown Kent and you’ll need all three to compete. Kent Parks and Recreation, in partnership with a whole bunch of volunteers representing the Boy Scouts and Kent State’s Crooked River Kayakers, are proud to put on the 2010 Black Squirrel Adventure Race, with registration beginning at 7 am on Saturday, August 7th at Home Savings Plaza (corner of Main Street and Water Street) with a race start time of 9 am.
I have both a professional and personal interest in this event as I plan to compete with a couple of other mid-life crisis types in the relay event. Bad knees from too many miles put in on the pavement will keep me from competing solo but I’m more of a team guy anyways and I’m hoping that all those mountain bike miles that I’ve put on my bike this year will pay off on smooth tires as well. Last year our kayak teammate went down with his ship (don’t ask) so even though we finished the running and biking legs our official listing was the dreaded DNF — did not finish. I’m confident this year will be different — it has to be, right?
The Euclide family of Kent set the relay bar pretty high last year but we’re planning to take a spot on the podium this year.
It’s events like this that we had in mind when we looked at the wonderful resource the river trial network provides in Kent so come out and enjoy what promises to be a great day of blood, sweat and tears in downtown Kent.
