The City’s Public Service Department put out a press release at the end of last week announcing the impending completion of another leaf season. Residents were being advised to rake their leaves out to their curb no later than Monday, December 13th, to take advantage of the final sweep of the City leaf collection crews before we officially trade in the rakes for shovels for the year.
Apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the leaf memo, and as a result of 6″ to 8″ of fresh snow the leaf season may actually be over sooner than planned. If we get a quick reprieve in temperatures, and all the white stuff melts, it’s possible that we could try to get the leaf trucks on the road again but I don’t see anything in the weather forecast which would suggest that’s going to happen — it actually looks like more snow is coming. Whoopeee.
We know there’s probably still some leaf piles under the snow but it’s not practical to try to collect them right now. Depending upon how many leaves are still buried we might try to catch up with the leaf piles after the snow melt in early spring unless we get some miraculous return of 50 degree temps in the next week or so but I wouldn’t hold your breath. No guarantees that we can make a leaf pass in the Spring, it’s really going to depend on the weather and you see how well that’s working for us this year.
So if you were all geared up for the last leaf raking of the year, it looks like you’ll have to wait — but don’t worry you’ll still get your exercise as there’s plenty of snow to shovel.
Here’s the Leaf Memo that was overcome by events this weekend.

The City of Kent 2010 Leaf Collection Program
Residents are asked to rake their leaves to the curb prior to Monday, December 13th, 2010, to allow City crews enough time to have all leaves collected before the end of the collection program.
The 2010 Leaf Collection Program will end Friday, December 17th, 2010.
Residents are reminded that loose leaves will not be picked up after December 17th 2010 and will not be picked up during the Spring of 2011.
If you prefer to bag your leaves, please place them on the curb and call the Service Department at 330-678-8105 to request a bagged leaf pickup. The deadline for bagged leaf pickup requests is Friday, December 17th 2010.
Leaf Drop Off
Residents may take leaves to the Yard Waste Site, located at the entrance to Plum Creek Park. Please remember to empty the bags and take them with you when dropping leaves at the site.
