It looks like this Saturday, October 6, is going to be busy in Kent so I wanted to be sure you had ample time to plan so you didn’t miss out on anything. First off, Kent State is holding the 7th annual Bowman Cup 5K race at 8:30. The race will be followed by the “official” ribbon cutting for the latest extension fo the Portage Hike and Bike Trail that meanders around Kent State campus at 10:30 am. This is a county trail that is open to all residents and students alike. As a paved trail, it’s a bit too smooth for my mountain biking tastes, but I’m thinking it would be a great place to get the old roller blades on and go cruising. It’s also homecoming weekend which means more family fun (free kid slides, bungee bouncing, bull riding, etc.) before the game on the stadium grounds, followed by the game at 4 pm. versus Miami of Ohio.
Boman Cup Race
Join us for the 7th Annual Bowman Cup 5K Race/Walk on Saturday, October 6th, 2007. The race, named after Kent State University’s 5th President, Dr. George Bowman, will be held at 8:30 a.m. The race begins at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC).
The state of-the-art facility offers plenty of parking, indoor registration and restroom and locker room facilities. All runners will be allowed full use of the facility after the race to enjoy our fitness floor, track, natatorium, and other amenities.
But this year is bigger and better than any year before! In cooperation with the Portage County Hike & Bike Trail, the Bowman Cup route will take a new course this year, heading through a new neighborhood in Kent and utilizing the newly created trail. Runners will still endure the same grueling pace that the Bowman Cup demands, just in a new setting. Additionally, after our awards ceremony (approximately 10:30 a.m.), all runners will be invited to attend the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony followed by a 1-mile Charity Fun Run to celebrate.
Prizes and raffles will be waiting at the end of the race to all those who participate.

Portage County Hike and Bike Trail Opening
This trail opening is exciting news and represents another significant step towards completing a trail loop between Kent and Ravenna — with a connection to the MetroParks trail network in Summit County. It won’t be long and we’ll be able to ride, run or roll all over northeast Ohio trials starting and ending in our home town.
