I don’t know how much folks follow regional news but Akron was the most recent city in our area to pass a law that raises the age to buy cigarettes to 21 rather than 18.
Here’s a link to the Akron Beacon story: https://www.ohio.com/akron/news/local/council-splits-on-lifting-age-for-sale-of-tobacco-in-akron
Kent’s Health Commissioner reports that the Kent Health Board is also a fan of raising the age to legally purchase cigarettes to 21 in Kent — which is why the Kent Health Department is sponsoring a Tobacco 21 forum to discuss it with members of the community.
A change in the purchase age for cigarettes would need to eventually come before City Council for a vote and right now nothing is on City Council’s schedule to consider it but I suspect later this summer it may work its way into Council Chambers.
The Kent Health Department has planned a community “Tobacco 21 Forum” scheduled for May 22nd at 6 pm in the Fire Station so if you want to learn more, here’s your chance.
